Searching for a missing dog in the city of stray dogs: Addis Ababa

The search for a dog provides an exceptional insight into Ethiopia’s capital. Friends, street kids and a film crew go in search of ‘Leman’ who is missing in a city full of stray dogs. Do we believe what we see? Shot in ten days with the help of the local population.

Asnaketch Worku: “The Lady with the Kirar”

By iZefen – “The kirar is a really powerful instrument” reckons a bed ridden Asnaketch Worku. “It stirs my emotions”, she reminisces fighting to hold back the swelling tears in her sunken eyes. She ironically longs to play the instrument hanging on the wall in front of her – an instrument that she played magically in the heydays of her artistic life. “My hands failed me” she whispers and pauses.

“Do you know where I was born?”, he asked with an intriguing voice that resonated well beyond the drums and bass that seemed to overwhelm him.”

 I was born in Harar”, he answered his own question.

There was a sudden pause as the audience was trying to guess as to where this was heading to.

2010 UMBC Valedictorian Benyam Kinde

Benyam Kinde may not be a Nobel Prize winner yet, but he is headed in that direction: he was recently invited to attend this summer’s Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Germany as a young researcher. It is an honor that he has worked hard for throughout his time at UMBC. At the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), he is conducting research on HIV that provides insight into the life cycle of the virus and an understanding about where the virus spreads.
